About the Young Leaders Initiative

Emerging from an original idea of Northamptonshire County Council Leader Jim Harker and Deputy Leader Joan Kirkbride, the Young Leaders Initiative is the first of its kind in the UK, bringing together an elected leadership group of 15 young people consisting of seven Young Leaders and eight Members of Youth Parliament.

What does the Young Leaders Initiative aim to do?

  • Give the young people of Northamptonshire a voice at local, county, regional and national level that will be heard by decision makers, policy planners and providers of services for young people.
  • Involve young people in the development of strategies and policies that affect them.
  • Involve young people in democratic processes at all levels.
  • Allocate a £25,000 Youth Initiative Fund.

How are the Young Leaders group going to achieve these aims?

  • By participating in full council and scrutiny meetings at District, Borough and County councils.
  • By attending relevant UKYP regional and national events.
  • By working collaboratively in area and countywide teams.
  • By involving hard-to-reach young people as well as young people from established groups such as schools and youth groups.
  • By consulting young people to identify a need for projects in Northamptonshire.
  • By developed young people's ideas into project proposals to be considered for funding by the Youth Initiative Fund.
  • By leading campaigns on issues that affect young people.
