Most of us take having somewhere to live for granted. But that is not always the case and also at some stage most people decide to set up a home for themselves. You might feel you want more independence and can afford to pay your own way or maybe you're going to study away from home. You need to think carefully about the types of accommodation, how you will pay the rent and your bills. Sometimes young people leave home for various reasons and could find themselves homeless. If you're thinking of leaving home because of stress with your family try to sort it out before it gets out of control. If you're under 16 you can't normally leave home unless there are serious problems like abuse or violence. If this is the case contact Social Services. HomelessnessBeing homeless is not just about sleeping rough. It can also include people who are staying temporarily with friends or relatives, staying in bed and breakfast, in a hostel, or somewhere else that is dangerous. If you are 18 or over and think you are homeless you should go to the Council's homeless section and say that you want to make an application as homeless. They will then ask you questions and look into your situation before they decide what help to offer you. See Local Housing Contacts. If you are 16 or 17, or have recently left care the Social Services should be able to provide you with more support in finding suitable accommodation. You can contact the Leaving Care team on 01604 236236. If you are homeless or need housing advice look at the contact details below or visit the page on homelessness on Directgov. Housing BenefitIf you are able to find accommodation you should find out about any housing benefits you may be entitled to. Housing benefit is paid by local councils. You can normally claim housing benefit if you are claiming other benefits or have a low income. You can find information on the Government's benefits website: www.direct.gov.uk Leaving CareIf you were in care at the age of 16 and have been in care for 13 weeks or more since the age of 14 you are entitled to Leaving Care services. They will help you draw up a plan for your future. Contact the Leaving Care Team on 01604 236236. Local Housing ContactsIf you are looking for housing or are homeless contact your local borough council. They can provide advice on local housing options and benefits.
