Filling in an Application Form

Here are a few things you'll need to think about when filling in an application form:

  • Spelling - make sure everything is spelt correctly. Accurate spelling can sometimes be the difference between getting an interview and not.
  • Keep it neat - write in black or blue ink and keep your hand-writing as neat as possible. If an employer can't read what you've written, you might not be invited for interview.
  • Practice first - a good way to avoid mistakes and crossing out is to photocopy the application and practice on that one first. That way, if you do make a mistake, you can get it right on the actual application form.
  • Proof read - before sending off an application form, always make sure you've read it through at least twice. If possible, get someone else to read it through for you - sometimes, what you think you've written is not always what's on the paper.
  • Closing date - almost all job vacancies will have a closing date. Make sure you know when this is (time and date) and make sure you get your form delivered in plenty of time. If possible, deliver it yourself instead of relying on the postal service.
